7. LOOKS AND BASHFULNESS - ABOUT IMAGE AND SELF-AWARENESS

We live in hyper self-aware and self-reflecting times, write the cultural theorists. The excess of cameras around us means that we have become very aware of the image perceived of us. Big Brother has crept into our minds. We look at ourselves through the eyes of others. We have become our own audience. But just like the cameras, this self-awareness is misleading. How do we know when we are overexposed to manipulated images (of ourselves) what is still “real”?

LONG ROUTE Monday 6 and Thursday 9 July from 17.30 until 22.30

This route includes:

1. An exclusive dinner provided by One for the Road. Eat, drink and talk at the dinner table with philosopher Jos de Mul about the current influence of the new media on how we experience the world and express ourselves (6 July). The expert of 9 July is still to be determined).

2. The provocative performance Met open ogen (With open eyes) by Judith Hofland: about power and powerlessness of images and reality. How much do we allow ourselves to be manipulated? How well do we know what is “real” and what is not? And if we were allowed to choose, would we go for the fiction or the facts – or is the difference between the two less clear than we think...?

3. The performance Ik vind je leuk maar niet in het openbaar (I like you, but not in public) by Natasha Schulte and Romanee Rodriguez: a theatrical and stimulating investigation into the theme of “shame”. How much is our behaviour determined by the gazes fixed on us? Who is that third eye in the back of our heads and what does it see? In a train carriage we find ourselves caught between voyeurism and self-awareness. What is that uncanny feeling on the edge of mysteriousness and insecurity?

4. Sea container programme De Reusachtige Microkosmos (The gigantic microcosmos): about the tiniest truths in the flows of a limitless world. How do we get a grip?

Specially reduced price 32.00 euros excl. train ticket
