5. FLEE OR REBUILD? - ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL VERSUS URBAN REGENERATION

North Amsterdam is an example of the ever-expanding city, like many growing towns and new housing estates. Towns search for new housing locations; project developers seize the opportunities. Under the pressure of population growth households are driven out and new families are relocated. What is the effect of this continual growth on the people who live there? Should the individual always give in for the sake of the greater good? The city is encroaching upon us. What does it want? And how do we stay standing?!

LONG ROUTE Friday 3 and Friday 10 July from 17.30 until 22.00

This route includes:

1. An exclusive dinner provided by One for the Road. Eat, drink and talk with Kees Diepeveen, North Amsterdam alderman (3 July) and Harry van den Berg, founder of the Tolhuis Garden cultural foundation and chairperson of ANGSAW North Amsterdam, Green City on the Waterside (10 July).

2. Sea container programme De Reusachtige Microkosmos (The gigantic micro-cosmos): about the small personal interests which always float to the surface in the midst of great ideals, rebuilding and change. In the Tolhuis Garden of Overhoeks, the latest generation of theatre-makers show how every gigantic project leaves its mark at the lowest level.

3. The artistic performance Hoog Bezoek (Distinguished guest) by Elien van der Hoek: a fairy-tale world in the middle of a building site for a new housing estate. A tiny woman builds her house. Everything is made exactly to measure. A small world but just big enough. What if someone comes along who is bigger? Does she flee of rebuild?

4. The performance Onder Constructie (Under Construction) by theatre group De Jongens: in addition to a spectacular show, a dedicated protest against today’s consumption society and its inclination to build and rebuild.
